What You Will Learn

Learn how to move freeze-drying development beyond trial and error by using measurements, first-principles calculations, and predictive models. The workshop begins with the scientific foundations of freezing, sublimation, desorption, and heat and mass transfer before progressing into practical process modeling.
Participants will learn how experimentally determined parameters including vial heat-transfer coefficient, product resistance, minimum controllable pressure, and other critical process parameters become inputs to freeze-drying models. Hands-on dryer characterization will connect physical equipment performance with the data required for accurate predictions.

Using these inputs, participants will explore how models can predict product temperature, sublimation rate, primary-drying time, and process design space. The workshop will demonstrate how modeling supports cycle development, optimization, scale-up, technology transfer, and troubleshooting across different freeze dryers.

The objective is to replace guesswork with measured data and use predictive modeling to make freeze-drying development faster, more scientific, and more defensible.
